WEEK 3.1 SAY HI TO YIMOU ZHANG
Zhang was born on 2nd April 1950 in Xi'an, the capital of Shaanxi province. His father was a dermatologist and had been an officer for Ntional Revolutionary Army by the command of Chiang Kai-Shek in the period of Chinese Civil War. His uncle and an elder brother joined the NAtionalist forces to Taiwan after their 1949 defeat. Due to that, Zhang faced harsh life during his younger days.
During the Cultural Revolution of the 1960s and 1970s, Zhang left his school and went to work as a farm labourer at first for three years, and later then at a cotton textile for seven years in the city of Xianyang A the period, he took up painting and was still amateur in. Photography which he bough his first camera by selling his own blood. In 1978, he studied at Beijing Film Academy and majored in photography. He has an Hononary Doctorate Degree from Bodton University and one from Harvard University.
